Who is Scotland’s greatest uncapped player of all-time? An age-old question that will see those asking it presented with a host of different responses, with Tartan Army supporters recalling that one special player they wish they’d seen in the famous navy jersey.
Steve Clarke named six uncapped players in his most recent squad for the Nations League, though only one of them made it onto the pitch. Nicky Devlin made his debut in the final throws of the 0-0 draw with Portugal on Tuesday and capped off a memorable night with a decisive block in the closing stages of the Nations League clash. The likes of Andy Irving, Robby McCrorie and Jack MacKenzie were forced to wait for their international debuts though, remaining on the bench as unused substitutes.
But who are the 20 best footballers never to be called up by Scotland? We asked our readers to choose the player who they felt was the best uncapped Scottish footballer of all time via our social media pages, and this is their top 20, in no particular order.

17. Tommy Bryceland
A member of both the Norwich City and St Mirren Hall of Fame, Ayrshire born inside-forward Bryceland is fondly remembered at both clubs due to his natural ability to unlock defences. Played a pivotal role in St Mirren's famous Scottish Cup win of 1959, but sadly never featured for Scotland despite his achievements. | SNS Group 0141 221 3602

18. Alex Rae
While he was called up to the Scotland B squad, the ex-Rangers, Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder never made it to the senior set-up. A regular for Sunderland during the late 90s as they challenged in the higher-echelons on the EPL, he was also title winner with Rangers in 2005. Rae admitted a disagreement with then under-21 boss Craig Brown as a youngster may have been to blame for his international omission. Saying the disagreement was 'regrettable'. | SNS Group 0141 221 3602

19. Billy Stark
A goal scoring midfielder that managed to bag 84 goals in nine seasons for St Mirren, he flourished under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson after he brought him to Pittodrie in 1983. Won the league and cup double with Celtic later in his career but was another overlooked by Scotland. | SNS Group

20. Stephen Dobbie
A Queen of the South legend, Dobbie scored goals for the likes of Swansea City, Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers among others during his career, but was never given an opportunity to replicate his goal scoring ability on the international stage for Scotland. Ended his career with a grand total of 236 goals during his 21-year career, but retired from football in 2022 without earning a single cap. | SNS Group
