Key Rangers target Andreas Skov Olsen arrives in Glasgow as surprise transfer figure emerges for winger

Rangers are closing in on a marquee signing

Rangers are closing in on a marquee January signing after it was revealed that Denmark international Andreas Skov Olsen was set to travel to Glasgow to undergo a medical.

The right winger was linked with a move to Rangers earlier this week, and things have since moved at a rapid pace, with head coach Danny Rohl now hopeful of signing the Hillerød-born ace in time for this Friday’s game against Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup.

According to reports, the Glasgow giants have reached a deal with Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg that includes an option to buy the winger on a permanent deal in the summer. However, no official figure has been confirmed as of yet. Skov Olsen only joined the German side last January for a fee of £12million, but has struggled for regular starts since his big money from Club Brugge and is said to be ‘excited’ about a potential move to Ibrox this month.

The 40-cap international is said to have held positive talks with the Rangers hierarchy at the start of the week, and the club made further progress yesterday after opening up discussions with Die Weißgrünen for the 26-year-old, who has started just four league games this season.

Andreas Skov Olsen signing is major coup for Rangers

Despite his lack of game time in the German top flight, Skov Olsen’s arrival will be viewed as a major coup for Rangers, with several clubs across Europe said to have been keen on signing him this month. Standing at 6ft 1in, he is known for his pace, power, and ability to create chances.

Beginning his career with FC Nordsjælland, he scored 25 goals in 49 games from the wing. His form in the Danish Superliga convinced Bologna to stump up a fee of £5million for him, before signing for Belgian giants Club Brugge in 2022, where he rose to prominence over a three-year stay at the Jan Breydel Stadium. During his time in the Pro League, he scored 49 goals and won two league titles alongside the Belgian Cup.

The Denmark international is now expected to arrive in Glasgow over the next 24 hours to conduct medical tests, before putting pen to paper on a deal that will see him move to Govan ahead of a crucial second half of the Scottish Premiership season.

Just three points behind league leaders Hearts, the appointment of Rohl has transformed Rangers’ title chances, and the 36-year-old boss wants to bolster his squad as he looks to leapfrog the Tynecastle outfit in the weeks and months ahead.

Having already agreed a £3million deal for Sturm Graz midfielder Tochi Chukwuani at the weekend, Rangers are hoping to confirm a deal for Westerlo left-back Tuur Rommens, with several reports claiming the Belgium under-21 international has already undergone a medical in Glasgow. With Sunderland duo Dan Neil and Romaine Mundle also on the club’s radar, head coach Rohl looks to be making serious progress in the January transfer window.

Rangers are also expected to allow midfielders Joe Rothwell and Lyall Cameron to leave the club this month. Teenage winger Findlay Curtis is rumoured to be available on a loan deal, with an unnamed Scottish Premiership club believed to be keen on signing the youngster until the end of the season.

One player who has already confirmed a move away from Ibrox is Colombian winger Oscar Cortes, who had his loan deal at Sporting Gijon cut short by the Spanish second-tier outfit earlier this week. The 22-year-old has struggled to make any impact at Rangers following an injury-plagued two-year spell, and has now confirmed a loan-to-buy move to Huracán.

The figure that the Argentinian outfit will be forced to pay Rangers for Cortes has now been revealed, with the club set to bank up to £1.65million for any potential permanent deal, with Huracán already paying a loan fee of £60,000.
