A week is a long time in politics - and it seems like an eternity since Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister following a Labour landslide at the General Election in July 2024.
Recent polls now show Nigel Farage’s Reform Party leading the way with British voters, although there’s a long way to go until the next mandatory General Election in August 2029 (that’s the latest date that it can be called).
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been weakened by a series of u-turns, the most recent of which has seen his government scrap plans to increase income tax.
And just last week there were (strenuously denied) claims that Wes Streeting is after his job, and there are rumbles of discontent amongst Labour backbenchers about his leadership.
It all inevitably leads to fevered speculation over whether Keir Starmer will lead Labour into the next election and, if not, who will take over as Prime Minister.
And then there’s the matter of who would win the election should Sir Keir still be in charge.
Here are the 13 current favourites to become next British Prime Minister.

9. Darren Jones - 18/1
Former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones took over as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations in the last cabinet reshuffle in September 2025. 10. Rupert Lowe - 20/1
Rupert Lowe was originally elected as a Reform MP for Great Yarmouth in 2024, but was expelled from the party over allegations of workplace bullying and making threats of physical violence against party chairman Zia Yusuf. He now sits as an independent and this year founded the right wing political organisation Restore Britain. His possible road to Downing Street would appear circuitous to say the least, but the bookies still give him a 20/1 chance. | Getty Images

11. Robert Jenrick - 25/1
Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor Robert Jenrick is one of two Conservative politicians most likely to take over from Kemi Badenock and lead the party to govenment. He's priced at 25/1. | Getty Images

12. James Cleverly - 25/1
James Cleverly, the current Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, is the other Conservative priced at 25/1 to become the next Prime Minister of the UK. | Getty Images
