Scotland team to face Argentina named with one change from New Zealand loss and big name on bench

Change in the back row as joint record holder recalled to squad

Rory Darge will replace Matt Fagerson in the back row for Sunday’s Quilter Nations Series match against Argentina at Murrayfield.

Darge missed six weeks of the season with a knee injury but was fit enough for a place on the bench for last weekend’s game with New Zealand and came on for the final 13 minutes of the 25-17 defeat.

He has now been given the nod to replace club-mate Matt Fagerson who is listed among the replacements. It is the only change to the starting side which ran the All Blacks close before being undone by Damian McKenzie’s late try and penalty.

As expected, the Argentina game has come too soon for Matt’s older brother, Zander Fagerson, who has been out for seven months with calf and knee injuries. Scotland coach Gregor Townsend is hopeful the prop will be fit for Scotland’s final autumn Test, against Tonga a week on Sunday.

In the meantime, D’arcy Rae continues at tighthead after a solid performance against New Zealand while Finn Russell has recovered from the knee and ankle knocks sustained against the All Blacks and is fit to start at 10 for Scotland.

There are significant changes to the Scotland bench for the Argentina game, the most notable of which is a recall for Duhan van der Merwe as Townsend reverts to three backs among his replacements.

The big winger is Scotland joint highest try-scorer of all time but was dropped for the New Zealand game - for the first time in his international career - with Kyle Steyn preferred. Steyn keeps his place for the Pumas match but van der Merwe is likely to feature at some point. Marshall Sykes drops out to make way for van der Merwe.

Rory Sutherland has not been included in the squad to face Argentina due to concussion so Glasgow’s Nathan McBeth provides cover at loosehead prop instead.

Elsewhere, the personnel is the same as last week as Scotland prepare to face the Pumas for the first time in three years.

Scotland won that game 52-29, with Darcy Graham scoring a hat-trick, and the Hawick flyer will win his 50th cap this weekend. He is tied with van der Merwe as Scotland’s leading try-scorer, with the two Edinburgh wingers having 34 apiece.

Argentina are currently ranked sixth in the world, two places above Townsend’s team, but Scotland have a good home record against them, having not lost at Murrayfield to the Pumas since 2009.
