According to the R&A more than 6.1 million adults in the UK played at least one round of golf last year - making it one of the country’s most popular sports.
It’s not a cheap hobby, with equipment and membership fees easily running into the thousands.
And playing a famous course - particularly one which host the Open Championship - tends to cost several hundred pounds.
A new regional ranking of British golf prices has identified the cheapest and most expensive places to play a round, from municipal curses to private clubs.
Data specialists at Felons Support crunched the numbers and found that Scotland was hope to both the highest and lowest green fees.
Littlehill, a council course in Glasgow, costs just £16,50 for a standard 18-hole round, while playing one of the top 100 courses in Britain averages a whopping £265.
But event that number is dwarfed by the most expensive places to play golf, which don’t even include the likes of St Andrews, Muirfield or Royal Troon.
Private members clubs with no visitor green fee, such as Loch Lomond and Wentworth, are excluded, as are courses with no published price.
Here are the top 10.

1. Turnberry - £1,000
It perhaps is no surprise that the most expensive round in the UK is the famous Ailsa Course at Trump Turnberry. Controversial US president Donald Trump bought the hotel and golf resort in 2014 and prices have risen ever since. The last time the links course hosted the Open was back in 2009 and you'll now be charged £1,000 to follow in the footsteps of winner Stewart Cink. Hotel residents pay 'only' £475. | Getty Images

2. Trump International Golf Links - £560
Not content with owning the most expensive golf course to play in the UK, Donald Trump also owns the second most expensive. Opened in 2012 on land bought by Trump just north of Aberdeen, the creation of Trump International Golf Links was met by furious protests from local people and environmentalists. The course last year hosted the DP World Tour Scottish Championship and costs £560 a round. | Getty Images

3. Royal Birkdale - £495
Royal Birkdale, which hosted The Open Championship, charges £495 for a standard round. A £99 ballot for 40 tee times at the Merseyside course attracted more than 26,800 applications. | Getty Images

4. Kingsbarns Golf Links - £486
Fife is famous when it comes to its courses, including St Andrews - the home of golf. But it's Kingsbarns Golf Links, one of the host courses for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, that leads the way when it comes to prices - charging £486 a round. | Getty Images
