We are just days away from the hectic January transfer window opening in the Scottish Premiership and the rumours are already swirling.
It feels like just yesterday that Celtic were breaking their transfer record for Arne Engels and Rangers were beginning their rebuild under Philippe Clement in the summer, but with new year bells almost upon us, both clubs will be expected to be front and centre when it comes to this month’s biggest transfers.
But who makes the list of the most expensive January transfers ever made? Who have Scottish clubs spent the most on during the January transfer madness over the years?
Here are the 18 most expensive Scottish Premiership transfers ever made during the January transfer window:

13. Stefan Johansen - Celtic - £2million
Won three consecutive Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic and was named the PFA Scotland Players' Player of the Year in his second season at Celtic Park after scoring nine goals and assisting a further eight. Left to sign for EPL outfit Fulham in the summer of 2016. Had spells with West Bromwich Albion and QPR over the last few years, but returned home to Norway last summer when he signed for Sarpsborg 08. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

14. Ismaila Soro - Celtic - £2million
Moved to Celtic in a deal worth around £2million from Israeli outfit Bnei Yehuda in January 2020, signing a four year deal with the club. The Ivorian was never able to nail down a regular first team spot though, and departed Celtic Park three years later to sign for Beitar Jerusalem after a season on loan to Arouca in Portugal. | SNS Group Photo: Alan Harvey - SNS Group

15. Andreas Hinkel - Celtic - £1.9million
The German international joined Celtic in January 2008 for a fee of us just under £2million from La Liga outfit Sevilla. He spent three years in Glasgow, winning the title in 2008 and the Scottish League Cup a year later. An anterior cruciate ligament injury put a premature end to his time in Scotland, where he was ruled out for nine months before joining Freiburg upon the expiry of his contract. Now the assistant manager of the Belgian national team. | SNS Group 0141 221 3602

16. Erik Sviatchenko - Celtic - £1.5million
The highly-rated Danish centre-back made the move to Glasgow in January 2016 after almost a decade long stint at FC Midtjylland. Helped the club win the domestic treble in 2017 before re-signing for FC Midtjylland in the summer of 2018 for a fee of around £1million. Still playing, Sviatchenko currently plays for Houston Dynamo in the MLS. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images
