We are just days away from the hectic January transfer window opening in the Scottish Premiership and the rumours are already swirling.
It feels like just yesterday that Celtic were breaking their transfer record for Arne Engels and Rangers were beginning their rebuild under Philippe Clement in the summer, but with new year bells almost upon us, both clubs will be expected to be front and centre when it comes to this month’s biggest transfers.
But who makes the list of the most expensive January transfers ever made? Who have Scottish clubs spent the most on during the January transfer madness over the years?
Here are the 18 most expensive Scottish Premiership transfers ever made during the January transfer window:

9. Oh Hyeon-gyu - Celtic - £2.5million
The South Korean moved to Celtic Park for a reported fee of £2.5million in late January 2023, but never got going in a Hoops shirt. Unable to dislodge Kyogo Furuhashi as Celtic's first choice striker, he fell down the pecking order when Brendan Rodgers' shelled-out £9.5million to sign Adam Idah and left to join Genk in the summer. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

10. Tugay Kerimoğlu - Rangers - £2.1million
The cultured Turkish midfielder had a foot like a traction engine and was a capable performer that simply struggled to get into an extremely strong Rangers midfield on a regular basis. Left to join Graeme Souness at Blackburn Rovers in 2001 and became a real cult-hero during his eight season stay at Ewood Park. Since retirement, he has worked with Mark Hughes at Manchester City and Roberto Mancini at Galatasary. He also had a one season spell as manager of Şanlıurfaspor. Random fact: He won Turkish Masterchef in 2010. The more you know. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group

11. Ki Sung-yueng - Celtic - £2.1million
The South Korean midfielder was a real technician in the engine room, and performed well after making the move from FC Seoul. A player the Hoops made a big profit on, Swansea City paid £6million in order to take him from Celtic Park, where Ki went on to have a successful EPL career, featuring for the Swans, Sunderland and Newcastle United. 12. Kevin Thomson - Rangers - £2million
After impressing in midfield for Hibs, Rangers paid £2million to the Easter Road club to bring him to Ibrox late in January 2007. Thomson was a big success in Glasgow, winning five domestic trophies. A fan favourite, Thomson scored his first goal for Rangers in a victory against Celtic and played a big in the club's run to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final. Now retired, he won the Scottish League Two title as manager of Kelty Hearts, though he resigned just weeks after lifting the trophy. Now more often seen as a pundit on TV. | SNS Group 0141 221 3602 Photo: SNS Group
