Former Rangers hero leaves role after just 116 days with 'impossible to continue' statement

Former Rangers favourite Jermain Defoe has left his first managerial job after just 116 days, citing it was “impossible” for him to continue in the role.

Defoe, 43, took his first permanent manager’s role in March when he was appointed boss of English fifth-tier side Woking, taking charge of the club’s final six games, winning two, drawing three and losing just once as the Cards ended the campaign in 15th position.

The former England striker had stated that he was looking forward to working with “a historic club”, adding that he saw “huge potential” and was thrilled to be part of this exciting project. I can’t wait to get started,” and kicked off his managerial career with a pulsating 3-3 home draw against Eastleigh.

Defoe, who ended his career with Sunderland in March 2022 following three years with Rangers, had enlisted the help of former Everton and Newcastle United midfielder Paul Bracewell, who was appointed as his assistant. However, the pair have now exited Kingfield Stadium just 16 days before their season is set to get underway, with Defoe releasing an explosive statement via his official social media page.

“Following recent discussions, I can confirm that I have mutually agreed to leave my position as manager of Woking FC,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position. I am extremely proud at the work undertaken during my time at the time and genuinely felt that we were building something special.

“I would like to thank Todd Johnson for giving me the opportunity to manage the club. I am incredibly grateful to the supporters and, most importantly, the players, who I am genuinely gutted for. The group is a fantastic one, and I wish that squad every success for the season ahead. Really disappointed the journey has ended so soon, but I leave with great pride in what Paul Bracewell, Karl Halabi and I were building at the club. My time at Woking FC has been an eye-opening managerial experience and one that will undoubtedly make me stronger for the next challenge in my career.”

Earlier in the day, a statement from the club said: “Woking Football Club can confirm that the club and First Team Manager Jermain Defoe have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Jermain for his contribution during his time at Woking Football Club, and we wish him every success in the future. The club remains fully focused on delivering its objectives both on and off the pitch. We would like to thank our supporters for their continued support.”
