Rangers boss Danny Rohl addresses Wolves loanee Nasser Djiga's Rangers situation and reveals fresh injury blow
Defender’s emergence is welcomed by head coach - but issue further up pitch
Rangers boss Danny Rohl is pleased with the competition at centre-half and has welcomed the options at his disposal for the rest of the season after strong recent performances from Nasser Djiga.
The Wolves loanee made his first appearance in four matches last weekend against Celtic and put in an assured performance as Rangers kept a clean sheet. Djiga is now in contention to keep his place for Sunday’s trip to St Mirren in the Premiership.
Brought in from the English Premier League side last summer, Djiga originally struggled under the head coach Russell Martin and then spent a month on international duty with Burkina Faso at the Africa Cup of Nations. Since returning from the tournament in early January, he has started eight games and has improved his overall levels.

Rangers have improved their overall defensive stability since Rohl took over in mid-October, with Emmanuel Fernandez in particular impressing. He is now a first-team regular alongside experienced centre-half John Souttar, who recently signed a new contract at Ibrox.
“I have great centre-backs available at the moment,” said Rohl. “I think everyone is ready. For me, Nasser played an outstanding game. Both of them, Manny and Nasser, were really strong. They won every one-on-one duel. We could play a high-line because they are very quick and also calm on the ball. Then I have John, who gives the group an experience. This is great. This is good to have.”
While Rohl has a welcomed conundrum at the back for the trip to Paisley, he does have one fresh injury worry over Ivorian midfielder Mohamed Diomande.
“Dio will not be available,” confirmed Rohl. “He got a small shoulder injury. All the other players are so far, so good. I've had to make some decisions with the squad, but Dio is the only one who is not available, 100 per cent.”
Rangers have not away from Ibrox since a 2-0 triumph against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on January 11 but Rohl is unperturbed about recent travel sickness. “I think in general, for me, it doesn't matter if it's away or home,” added the head coach. “I think this is key: we always want to control the game, dominate the game, want to take points, and this is our challenge.”
Rohl also has to deal with a managerial change at St Mirren after Stephen Robinson departed on Thursday for Aberdeen. The German says the focus has to remain in-house in such situations rather than over-analysing a change with an opponent.
“I think, firstly, the old manager did a good job there in St Mirren,” said Rohl. “I think they will carry on the same way. I'm not sure if they changed so much. I think there's stability in this group of players. Of course, I think we had the same situation against Aberdeen a couple of weeks ago.
“Focus on ourselves. We have to deliver, we have to play with our style, with our intensity. If we are ruthless and clinical in both boxes, then there's a great opportunity to take the next three points.”
