'Shame for all of us': Danny Rohl accepts Rangers-Celtic review could come with consequences

Review has been launched into fan unrest in Scottish Cup tie

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl accepts there could be “consequences” after crowd trouble marred last Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox against Celtic.

Supporters from both clubs invaded the pitch at full time the violent scenes have been condemned all across Scottish society. The Scottish Football Association has launched an independent review, which both Celtic and Rangers have welcomed, with some onlookers calling for away ticket allocations to be scrapped going forward.

Rohl was experiencing the fixture for the third time since moving to Scottish football in October and is keen to see travelling fans at the game. However, he understands that the probe could lead to sanctions on away ends going forward.

“I think nobody likes to see this,” Rohl said of the scenes last weekend. “I think it was a big part after the game. We didn't speak about football, we spoke about all the other things around on the pitch, off the pitch. I think nobody likes to see this. It was over 120 minutes, an exciting game, a lot of good emotion on the pitch, and off the pitch. This is what we want. And then, after, the only topic was the situation on the pitch, and this should not have happened.”

Asked if it opened his eyes to the fixture, Rohl responded: “Not open my eyes, this is the wrong word. Nobody likes to see this. I said this before, I think the emotional part was great during the game. I think I would like to have these Old Firms with supporters from both sides. I think this is great. This makes the football exciting, it makes the atmosphere in the stadium, and I think everyone should take responsibility so that we can keep having this.

“I think there's an investigation and then they will look for all these things and then finally there will be some consequences, there will be some conclusions, and then let's see what happens.”

Pressed on whether he is concerned that away allocations will be cut or completely removed, Rohl answered: “Yeah, it would be a shame for us or for all of us, that is what I try to explain. I think since I'm here, I really enjoyed this game with the supporters at both ends. I think this is great. If you're away or at home, that makes the football exciting, and hopefully we can carry on. But, of course, if such a thing happens, then you have to be careful because it could be that there's a consequence. The fans in the stadium, they like to see football, they feel the consequences, and it would not be nice for all of us.

“I think there's an investigation, and we will see what that means. I don't know yet the consequences of all these things that have happened.”

The next Old Firm match is set to take place at Celtic Park after the split and could be played as early as late April. After the return of away allocations for the fixture, Rangers would be expecting around 2500 tickets for the match under normal circumstances.
