Scottish Premiership action has taken a back seat this week, with Scotland’s return to action in the Nations League taking centre stage under new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli.
Despite drawing 0-0 in their opening game away to Slovenia, a strong second-half display has given Scotland something to build on as they look ahead to games against Switzerland and North Macedonia this week.
Several fresh faces have been included in Pocognoli’s inaugural squad, with Robbie Ure and Stephen Welsh making their international debuts in Ljubljana at the weekend. Meanwhile, the uncapped quartet of Luis Binks, Josh McPake, Luke Graham and Kristi Montgomery occupied places on the bench.
However, with the Scotland squad getting a fresh lick of paint, we decided to look back at international players of the past to ask ‘where are they now?’, and several of them are filling up the free agent list.
But which former Scotland men are available on a free transfer two months into the season? Here are 8 Scotland internatonal still searching for new clubs this season.

1. Johnny Russell
The ex-Dundee United fan favourite carved out a career in the MLS after joining Sporting Kansas City in January 2018. After scoring 67 goals in 232 appearances, he signed a short-term deal with Real Salt Lake before he returned to Tannadice last season on a similar deal. That deal expired at the end of the season, though, and he is now available as a free agent at 36. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group

2. Matty Phillips
Most notably scored the winning goal in a 1-0 friendly win over Hungary in 2018, and won 16 caps in total for Scotland. Now 35, he signed a short-term contract with Stevenage in February after leaving Oxford United. However, he was released at the end of the campaign after scoring twice in 19 appearances.

3. Jordan Archer
The 33-year-old goalkeeper is infamous among Scottish football fans due to a disastrous senior international debut against Peru. Qualifying to play for Scotland through his parents, he made his first and only senior appearance in 2018, but made two major blunders that directly led to the team's 2-0 defeat. He's spent the last few seasons warming the bench at Middlesbrough, Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth, but is currently a free agent after his release from Fratton Park this summer. | SNS Group

4. Kevin McDonald
Now 37, the five-cap Scotland international was recently released by Exeter City in the summer and is looking for his next club. Starting his career at Dundee, McDonald has represented Fulham, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley, amongst others, during his long career.
