Hibs push plans for new striker - latest on Bailey Cadamarteri, Lyndon Dykes, Elie Youan and Martin Boyle

Jamaican striker on list as Easter Road side ponders options

Hibs are weighing up a move for Sheffield Wednesday striker Bailey Cadamarteri as the Easter Road accelerate plans to bolster their front line for the second half of the season.

Sitting fifth in the Premiership, Hibs went into the January transfer window with designs on bringing in a new No 9 to compete with Kieron Bowie, Martin Boyle, Thibault Klidje and Elie Youan.

It has emerged that Cadamarteri, a 20-year-old Jamaican internationalist, is on Hibs recruitment chiefs’ shortlist. He has been a regular starter at Hillsborough this season, although he has netted just twice as the Owls grapple with financial uncertainty and a debilitating points deduction.

Wednesday had a 12-point penalty applied when the club entered administration and also a further six-point sanction for breaches of payment obligations. They are marooned at the foot of the table on -7 points and are all but certain to be relegated.

With the club in such a precarious position, Hibs could look to drive a cut-price fee for Cadamarteri - who is the son of former Everton player Danny, who had a spell in Scotland with Dundee United between 2009 and 2011.

Hibs broke their transfer record to sign Togolose internationalist Klidje last summer for £1 million and would be prepared to spend money during this window on the right player. Reports on Thursday suggested that Cadamarteri would command a similar fee, but The Scotsman understands Hibs would not expect to spend that amount on him.

However, Cadamarteri is not the only striker on Hibs’ radar. Hibs recruitments chiefs have put forward a dossier of players to sporting director Malky Mackay and head coach David Gray to peruse.

The latest on Dykes’ future at Birmingham City

Hibs came close to signing Scotland striker Lyndon Dykes from Birmingham City last summer, only for the loan deal to fall apart at the last minute due to wages. Dykes remains a peripheral figure at St Andrew’s and could depart during this transfer window.

Birmingham boss Chris Davies was quizzed on the future of Dykes and former Hearts midfielder Marc Leonard on Thursday and he said: “At the moment we have got a lot of moving parts around players potentially coming in and players potentially going out. We’re looking at everything and trying to put a squad together for each match that works for us. We’ll see how the next weeks go with it all, there’s going to be a lot of moving parts in the next three weeks, I’m sure.

“We’ve been talking a lot to the players and their agents, they haven’t had as much game time as they would like, which is fair. We’ll see how it all develops and things will become clearer as the weeks go by with them.”

The future of Youan at Hibs also remains uncertain despite the Frenchman recently playing a part in the first team. The 26-year-old scored twice in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Kilmarnock but is now in the last six months of his contract - as is Australian talisman Boyle. Youan was a target for Legia Warsaw back in August and Hibs could choose to sell him now rather than lose him on a free in the summer. It is believed that no talks have been held as yet over a contract extension at Easter Road.

On Boyle, fears that he could be out for an extended period of time have been allayed after scan results on a hamstring injury suggested that he may be in contention to return for the Scottish Cup tie against Dunfermline Athletic a week on Saturday.
