David Gray sacked by Hibs as Ian Gordon sends emotional message after decision board 'had to make'

The Hibs icon has paid the price for a poor start to the season at Easter Road.

David Gray has been sacked as Hibs head coach, the Easter Road club have confirmed.

The 38-year-old’s departure comes in the wake of Tuesday’s 1-0 Premiership defeat to Kilmarnock that made it six consecutive home losses in the league for the first time since 1920. Hibs finished third in his first season at the helm, and placed fifth last term, but performances have regressed at the start of his third campaign.

He has now become the first managerial casualty in the Scottish Premiership this season ahead of Saturday’s match with Aberdeen at Easter Road, which precedes a three-week international break. John Potter is the interim manager for that clash, with Hibs currently ninth after six games. Assistant Liam Craig and goalkeeper coach Craig Samson also make way.

Chairman Ian Gordon said: “Firstly, I would like to thank Dave for everything he has done for the Football Club, as a player, coach and most recently Head Coach. Dave has been an inspirational figure at the Club during his time here, and he has been a true friend and fantastic colleague to so many at the Football Club. On behalf of my family, I would like to personally thank him for everything he has done for us since we joined the Club.

What has David Gray achieved at Hibs

“As a person, he constantly set the standard with his attitude, professionalism and general work ethic and he will be sorely missed around the building by all the players and staff at the Football Club. On the pitch, he has delivered some incredible moments for our fans, and brought a level of stability and consistency that we haven’t reached in recent years.

“Ultimately, this is a decision that we have not taken lightly, but unfortunately, one as a Board we had to make due to the recent downturn of results and performances. We wish Dave, Liam Craig and Craig Samson all the best for the future and thank them for their commitment and effort during their time with the Club. They will always be welcome back to Easter Road.”

Gray’s departure brings an end to an iconic association of more than 12 years with the Leith club that includes scoring the winner in the 2016 Scottish Cup final win versus Rangers. A right-back, he first joined in 2014 from Burton Albion, making 177 appearances before retiring five years ago and joining Jack Ross’ coaching staff.

Gray served as interim manager four times after the departures of Ross, Shaun Maloney, Lee Johnson and Nick Montgomery, before taking the reins himself in the summer of 2024. He has since clinched a third place finish, got the club to the Conference League play-offs twice, and defeated Rangers at Ibrox in three consecutive seasons.

There have also been memorable home and away wins against Hearts and Celtic, while Kieran Bowie was sold for a club-record fee under his watch. Gray departs Hibs as one of their greatest servants of the modern era and will be fondly remembered by most fans for his service.
