Ex-Hearts boss to be named new head coach of Manchester United Women

Spaniard lined up for major move to WSL giants

Former Hearts boss Eva Olid is to become the new head coach of Manchester United Women.

The Spaniard is set to replace Marc Skinner, who left the role by mutual consent on Monday - a month before the start of the Women's Super League (WSL) season.

Olid, who left Hearts this summer after leading them to a first ever Scottish Women's Premier League title, will meet the United squad on Wednesday as the club finalise her appointment.

The 40-year-old joined Hearts in 2021 and signed an extension until the summer of 2026 with the option of a further year, but the club announced in April that Olid was to leave at the end of the season by mutual agreement.

She also guided the Edinburgh side to their first domestic final, but lost to Rangers in the 2024 Scottish Cup.

Hearts finished fourth in back-to-back seasons under Olid before dropping to fifth in 2024-25. But they finished two points clear of Rangers to win their first silverware last campaign.

Skinner had another year to run on his United contract but decided to move on after five years at the helm.

Under Skinner, United reached four domestic cup finals in as many seasons, winning the club’s first major honour in women’s football with the 2024 FA Cup triumph. He also presided over United finishing runners-up in the WSL in the 2022-23 season, securing Champions League football for the first time in their history.

In the 2025-26 campaign, they reached the Champions League quarter-finals before losing to Bayern Munich but they missed out on a spot in Europe’s elite club competition this season after a fourth-placed finish in the WSL.

United will begin their WSL season at London City Lionesses on September 4.
