Hearts land first SWPL title despite Hibs defeat as Rangers endure final day shocker

How the final day of the SWPL season unfolded as Hearts boss left ‘in shock’

Hearts have been crowned Scottish Women's Premier League champions for the first time despite losing to Hibs on the final day after Rangers failed to take advantage with an almighty collapse.

The Jambos entered the final round of fixtures two points clear at the top of the SWPL table and knew that avoiding defeat to their Edinburgh rivals would clinch the title ahead of Rangers, who needed to beat Glasgow City to have any hope of capitalising on a Hearts slip-up.

However, while Hearts went down to a 2-0 derby defeat at Meadowbank, Rangers succumbed to a shocking 6-0 loss at Petershill to miss out on the opportunity to steal first place.

The results secured a first trophy for Hearts boss Eva Olid in her final match in charge, with the Spaniard set to depart the club this summer.

"I'm in shock," Olid told BBC Alba. "You come with the mindset of 'win the game'. You don't win but you win the league. It's a strange feeling. We won the league, that is bigger than winning a game of football.

"We were the more consistent team. Last two weeks the players, you could feel were nervous. It's normal, it's a young team. First time that all of them are in this situation.

"It's just football things. I wanted to stay but competing as we were competing this year, it's not possible. I need to step away."

Rangers head coach Leanne Crichton admitted her team were "miles off it" adding: "It's a tough one because I felt we were in a really good position going into this game. The outcomes makes it a bitter pill to swallow but I can't fault the group for taking it to the final day.”

Rangers now face Celtic in the Women’s Scottish Cup final at Hampden next Sunday.
