How Hearts can win historic SWPL title with a game to spare - and how Rangers can stop them
Here’s how Hearts could get their hands on a very first SWPL title - and how Rangers could stop them.
The Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) title race could reach its conclusion this weekend, with Eva Olid’s Hearts on the verge of securing their first-ever championship ahead of Rangers.
Just two games remain, with the Gorgie Girls four points clear at the summit ahead of Leanne Crichton’s Rangers, making them clear favourites to become SWPL champions. Should Hearts win the title, the league will have crowned a different winner in each of their last five seasons.
Last year’s champions, Hibs, are already out of the title race, alongside Glasgow City (winners in 2023) and Celtic (winners in 2024), leaving only Rangers (winners in 2022) able to prevent them from a historic first top flight title win in Hearts Women’s history.
Hearts will welcome Glasgow City in their penultimate game of the season on Sunday, 17 May, with kick-off scheduled for 1:10pm, while back in Glasgow, Rangers will host rivals Celtic at Broadwood. That game will kick off at 4pm.
While it may feel like the trophy is destined to head to Edinburgh, a title race is never done until it is done. So if you’re looking to tune into the SWPL title race this Sunday, here are all the potential permutations:

What do Hearts Women need to do to win the SWPL?
The task for the Jambos this weekend is pretty simple. If they beat Glasgow City at the Oriam, they will be crowned as champions of the SWPL for the first time in their history. Currently four points ahead of Rangers with two games to spare, any form of victory would ensure they go into their final game of the season unable to be caught.
Depending on Rangers’ result against Celtic later in the day (kick-off: 4pm), Hearts could win the league with a draw, or even a defeat. For this to happen, Hearts would simply need to have matched Rangers’ result earlier in the day.
How can Rangers Women stop Hearts Women winning the SWPL?
As attested to above, if Hearts win, there is no result that would stop them from beating Rangers to the league title. However, if Rangers win and Hearts draw, or lose. It will take the SWPL title race into the final day.
The scenarios for Rangers are as follows:
- If Rangers win, and Hearts lose - the title race goes into the final day with Rangers one point behind.
- If Rangers win, and Hearts draw - the title race goes into the final day with Rangers two points behind.
- If Rangers draw, and Hearts lose - the title race goes into the final day with Rangers three points behind.
