Sister of Celtic legend is cup final hero with 89-second brace as Rangers left to lick their wounds

19y/o nets memorable Fir Park double to clinch silverware

Glasgow City youngster Lisa Forrest was delighted to add to the family silverware after scoring a memorable double against Rangers in the Sky Sports Cup final at Fir Park on Sunday.

The 19-year-old winger, whose big brother James has lifted 26 trophies in the men's game with Celtic, claimed her maiden honour in the SWPL after netting twice within 89 seconds in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory for her side.

Forrest opened the scoring on 70 minutes by turning home a corner kick at the back post before adding a quickfire second with a spectacular long-range effort after cutting in from the left onto her right foot. Rangers pulled one back through Katie Wilkinson with two minutes remaining, but City held on to end an 11-year wait for a League Cup triumph.

"I am just so buzzing to say that we've won it and to get it over the line," Forrest told BBC Scotland.

"All my team-mates are on at me for not shooting enough and I just saw the goal and just thought let's see what happens and thankfully it went in. It is credit to the full team today. I thought it was a really good performance."

City head coach Leanne Ross hailed Forrest for her match-winning contribution.

"She is unbelievable. She works so hard, day in, day out," Ross said. "She puts so much pressure on herself as well as a youngster. But that's what she's got in her locker. Special things like that."

On winning her first League Cup trophy as head coach, Ross added: "It feels brilliant. As I said before, it's been a long time since we've had our hands on this trophy. Any trophy is special, but to get this one back is a great feeling."

The win keeps City in contention for a domestic treble as they currently sit four points clear at the top of the Scottish Women's Premier League and have a Women's Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic on the horizon.

Rangers head coach Leanne Crichton urged her team to bounce back from the disappointment.

“The manner in which we lost the two goals was disappointing," she said. "The quickfire double really puts us under pressure. The momentum just shifts at that point. Frustrated that we waited until we were 2-0 down to really come out fighting, and frustrated with myself for not rolling the dice sooner.

"We're the ones that are going to need to lick our wounds and suffer tonight but we feel we can still go and recover the league title and we're still in the Scottish Cup."
