Ex-Celtic hero's 233-day drought continues as Scotland man ends wait for first win in five-goal thriller
Ex-Celtic hero downed by Scotland international as goal-scoring drought continues.
Former Celtic favourite Kyogo Furuhashi is still searching for his first goal for his new side, Los Angeles Galaxy, as his goal drought continued in their 3-0 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Furuhashi, 31, played a major role at Celtic, scoring 85 goals in all competitions after signing from Vissel Kobe in 2021, winning four Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish League Cups, and two Scottish Cups before leaving for Rennes for a fee of £10million in January 2025.
His spell in Ligue 1 was ill-fated, and he departed the club after just six months to sign for Birmingham City in the EFL Championship. After failing to reignite his career in the Midlands, though, he completed a cut-price £1million move to MLS outfit Los Angeles Galaxy, penning a five-year deal with the club in July.

Described as a player with “goal-scoring ability and diverse experience” upon his arrival, Furuhashi has once again struggled to impress with his new club, with the 3-0 defeat at BC Place meaning he has failed to find the net in his first seven games in the City of Angels. The Japan international is without a goal in the last 233 days, with his last strike coming in a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday for Birmingham way back on January 20.
Falling behind after just three minutes thanks to Brian White’s opening goal, the Galaxy went further behind just before the hour mark when Scotland international Ryan Gauld danced his way through the defence to place home beyond James Marcinkowski, with Furuhasi taken off just two minutes beforehand. An injury-time penalty from Bruno Caicedo completed the scoring.
Meanwhile, Angus Gunn picked up his first win in nine attempts with new club San Jose Earthquakes, with the Scotland international on the right end of a madcap 3-2 away win against San Diego FC on Wednesday night. The 30-year-old has had a difficult start to life in the MLS, failing to win any of his first eight games with his new side, which he joined on a free transfer from Nottingham Forest in the summer.
Currently in fifth place in the Western Conference, San Jose has seen their title credentials falter over the last three months, with their last win coming on May 24 in a 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers. Still on course for an MLS playoff spot despite their poor recent form, Bruce Arena’s side desperately needed a victory and got off to the perfect start at the Snapdragon Stadium when youngster Niko Tsakiris put them into the lead after just three minutes.

Things would go even better just nine minutes later when Preston Judd fired them further into the lead, and the Earthquakes looked set to cruise to victory when Ousseni Bouda bagged another goal in 35 minutes to hand Gunn’s side a three-goal lead. However, nerves were tested when Anders Dreyer reduced the deficit three minutes before the restart.
It looked as though the visitors would hold on for a much-needed victory when San Diego goalkeeper Carlos Dos Santos was sent off for a second yellow card, only for Earthquakes’ Max Floriani to suffer a similar fate when VAR deemed him to have fouled Cedric Bakambu in the area. The DR Congo striker stepped up to score and ensure a tense final few minutes for the visitors, but they’d hold on as Gunn celebrated his first win with his new side.
