Celtic transfer backed as 21 y/o told why 'tremendous' move can boost international form

The international striker has been backed to be a success at Celtic

Celtic have been named as the perfect stage for Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson to rediscover his scoring spark and reignite his stuttering career.

The Republic of Ireland striker has been on loan in Serie A with AS Roma this season but looks set to return to his parent club in the summer after failing to impress in the Italian capital, scoring just three goals in 10 league starts.

Expected to miss the remainder of the campaign after being forced to undergo surgery on a recurring ankle injury earlier this month, Ferguson’s future is currently in limbo, and former Irish international John Aldridge believes he could reinvigorate his career by making a move to Glasgow this summer.

“Celtic is a tremendous club with a great fan base,” said Aldridge. “With all due respect to the Scottish Premiership, it's not what the Premier League is, but it's still great and it would be a good experience scoring goals. I played for Tranmere in the first division, which is the one below, for years and it didn't stop me scoring goals for Ireland. The experience I had in Spain [with Real Sociedad], and then coming back to Tranmere, helped me.”

A boyhood Celtic fan, Ferguson has been linked with a move to the club in the past and he impressed the Parkhead faithful earlier this season when he scored twice in a 3-0 victory for AS Roma in the Europa League. Capped 26 times by the Republic of Ireland, the young striker first exploded onto the scene as a teenager, bagging 10 goals for Brighton in his 2022/23 breakout season.

However, Ferguson has struggled at the AMEX Stadium in the seasons that followed and ended last season on loan to West Ham United before his summer switch to Italy. However, Aldridge thinks that a chance to play for his boyhood club next season could spark him back into life and provide a boost to his international hopes, while the 67-year-old also dismissed talk that a move to the Scottish Premiership could hinder his chances of starting regularly for the Republic of Ireland.

“Sometimes it's all about you,” said Aldridge, speaking to BOYLE Sports who offer the latest football odds. “It’s not just about where you're playing at, or what level you're playing at, but what you can do within the structure of your international side.”
