'Lovely' island restaurant in private home named best in Scotland
A unique restaurant that’s situated in a family home is the best in Scotland according to the Good Food Guide, and I’ve never been more intrigued, writes Rosalind Erskine.
As many of my friends will attest, I love a good dinner party. Usually held in my flat in the autumn - for some reason the cold and dark makes me want to cook more - these dinners tend to be heavily pumpkin and Halloween themed and verge into the absurd at times. From trying to serve a kind-of cheese soup from inside a pumpkin to having to have matching, seasonal themed crockery, I’m not sure who I am trying to impress. But, it’s a great way to catch up with friends over a bottle of wine or five, and a load of discarded pumpkin flesh.

So it was with intrigue that I saw recently that the 16-cover Ar Bòrd on the Isle of Mull was named best restaurant in Scotland by the Good Food Guide who called it ‘tiny but mighty’. Meaning 'our table' in Gaelic, the restaurant is within the owner’s private home, offers a set seasonal menu which costs £55 per person and started as a supper club. There are two or four course menus with dishes including wild venison, fish from Peterhead and Scrabster and local shellfish. Vegetables and meat come from nearby farms and there are foraged wild herbs. Diners can bring their own bottle.
It’s brilliant to see a restaurant which many won’t have heard of triumph over the well known city names and it has inspired me to give that cheesy pumpkin soup another go this October. Sorry in advance to my friends.
