Could records be broken in Scotland this week as temperatures soar across the UK and Europe?

Yesterday (Tuesday, June 24) saw Scotland record its hottest day of the year so far - with a high of 29C recorded at Dyce in Aberdeen.

And temperatures are expected to rise further over the course of the week, peaking on Thursday, June 25.

In England and Wales it’s going to be even hotter, with the Met Office issuing a rare red extreme heat warning as temperatures could reach 40C.

It has seen travellers encouraged to avoid non-essential travel and hundreds of schools to at least partially close to ensure the safety of pupils.

North of the border forecasters expect the heat to peak at around 30C, meaning it’s unlikely to break any all-time records.

Here are all the record-breaking temperatures experienced in Scotland since records began.

What is Scotland’s hottest-ever recorded temperature?

It has never even got close to 40C in Scotland. The all-time record high was 34.8C at Charterhall in the Scottish Borders on July 19, 2022.

That compares to the all-time record low of -27.2°C (also the lowest in the UK) which has been recorded three times - at Braemar on February 11, 1895, and January 10, 1982, and at Altnaharra on December 30, 1995.

What is Edinburgh’s all-time high for temperature?

In Scotland’s Capital it reached a toasty 31.6C at the Edinburgh’s Botanic Gardens during the heatwave in July 2019.

What is Glasgow’s record-high temperature?

Glasgow’s record temperature had long been 31.1C, recorded in 1950, until the summer of 2018 when, on June 28, it reached 31.9C, memorably causing the roof of the city’s science centre to melt.

What is the hottest temperature recorded in Aberdeen?

The Granite City’s record high was recorded on July 17, 2006, when it reached 29.8C. That’s a record that could possible be beaten this week.

What’s Dundee’s all-time record temperature?

In the City of Discovery the temperature reached 30.5C on July 19, 2022.

What’s the record temperature for Inverness?

The Highland capital recorded a temperture of 28C on June 28, 2018.

What is Stirling’s all-time high temperature?

Sirling also recorded its highest ever temperature on June 28, 2018 - with the mercury hitting 32.3C.

What was the all-time temperature record for Perth?

In Ochentyre, near Perth, the temperature hit 32.2C on June 18, 1893.
