Historic East Lothian pub built in 17th century to get new management after £100k makeover

The popular old pub is getting a major refurbishment.

A historic East Lothian pub is set to undergo a £100,000 makeover, with a new tenant about to take over the venue.

The Railway Tavern, in Prestonpans, is currently operating under temporary management, but owners Star Pubs said they are now in the “final stages” of agreeing a new lease with a prospective licensee.

As well as new management, the pub is set for a “complete refurbishment” that will bring about an “exciting transformation” which will cover the interior and exterior of the venue.

The Railway Tavern, on the town's High Street, is housed in a building that served multiple purposes since it was built in the 17th century - including a dwelling house, an asylum, and a soldiers barracks.

Star Pubs says the refurbished watering hole will offer “a good range of drinks including classic and premium lagers, spirits, wines, and cocktails as well as soft drinks too, plus a range of live sports and entertainment in the form of quiz and karaoke nights”.

A spokesperson for the Heineken-owned firm said: "We can confirm that we are in the final stages of agreeing a new lease with a prospective licensee.

"This will come with investment from Star Pubs to upgrade the exterior and interior of the pub."
