The family of Bonnie Tyler have announced that the singer died last night (Wednesday, July 8) at the age of 75 at a hospital in Portugal as a result of an illness that she was being treated for.
Born Gaynor Sullivan in 1951 in the Welsh village of Skewen, she was the daughter of a coal miner and performed publicly for the first time at a talent competition organised by her aunt.
She started her career as a backing vocalist before forming her own band, Imagination, but found success with her 1977 debut album The World Starts which spawned the hit singles Lost in France, More Than a Lover and It's a Heartache. The latter reached the top five in both the UK and US charts.
But it was fifth album Faster That the Speed of Night, in 1983, which would see the song she became eternally known for - Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Her move into rock music was prompted by teaming up with Meatloaf producer and songwriter Jim Steinman, and both the album and the single were huge successes - Total Eclipse of the Heart remains one of the best selling songs of all time, shifting over six million copies.

Along the way she earned three Grammy Award nominations, three Brit Award nominations and an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to music.

1. Bonnie Tyler on...Total Eclipse of the Heart
"Whenever I sing 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' the way people sing along with me still excites me. It's one of the songs that audiences know all the lyrics to, and they sing along with me, and it makes me so happy. People also know my songs 'Holding out for a Hero' and 'Lost in France,' and this gives me so much joy on stage." | Getty Images

2. Bonnie Tyler on...her childhood
"We were brought up Protestant, and I went to church three times a day on a Sunday. My parents weren't Bible-bashers, but we all have a strong belief in God and a strong faith. We had a huge garden; our house was a bit like a scene from 'The Good Life.' I think Mam and Dad had it really hard, bringing up a big family on very little." | Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images

3. Bonnie Tyler on...drugs
"I've never taken drugs. My drug, I suppose, is drink. I never drink before I sing, but I do make up for it when I come off!" | Getty Images

4. Bonnie Tyler on...retiring
"I am going to keep on singing. I have no intention of retiring. Actually, I always wonder whether people know my songs in the different countries I visit. I feel nervous over whether they will sing along with me or not." | United Archives via Getty Images
