The family of Bonnie Tyler have announced that the singer died last night (Wednesday, July 8) at the age of 75 at a hospital in Portugal as a result of an illness that she was being treated for.
Born Gaynor Sullivan in 1951 in the Welsh village of Skewen, she was the daughter of a coal miner and performed publicly for the first time at a talent competition organised by her aunt.
She started her career as a backing vocalist before forming her own band, Imagination, but found success with her 1977 debut album The World Starts which spawned the hit singles Lost in France, More Than a Lover and It's a Heartache. The latter reached the top five in both the UK and US charts.
But it was fifth album Faster That the Speed of Night, in 1983, which would see the song she became eternally known for - Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Her move into rock music was prompted by teaming up with Meatloaf producer and songwriter Jim Steinman, and both the album and the single were huge successes - Total Eclipse of the Heart remains one of the best selling songs of all time, shifting over six million copies.

Along the way she earned three Grammy Award nominations, three Brit Award nominations and an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to music.

6. Bonnie Tyler on...singing
"I've been singing since I was 16 because I love it - I wanted to be a singer, not a star. There's a difference between wanting to be famous and wanting to sing well." | kpa/United Archives via Getty Im

7. Bonnie Tyler on...her long career

8. Bonnie Tyler on...class
"I suppose I don't have to work, but I do love working. I class myself as a working-class girl, and I've never stopped working. When I'm offered shows here, there and the other, I do an awful lot because I feel other people would love to be offered what I'm offered; who am I to say no? I'm definitely working class, and I always will be." | United Archives via Getty Images
