It’s almost time for fans to return to Hogwarts, as the release date for HBO’s Harry Potter series creeps closer.
The show, which will reimagine J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World for a new generation, is set to premiere this Christmas with a fresh take on the author’s first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Dominic McLaughlin will play the titular wizard, taking over from Daniel Radcliffe. Originally from Lanarkshire, the young actor beat out more than 32,000 other children to land the role, with his previous credits including Sky film Grow, which he starred in alongside Nick Frost, the new Rubeus Hagrid.
The open casting call found the perfect Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton, respectively. As for the professors and parents in Harry Potter, notable cast members include John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, with Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Harry’s Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon Dursley.
With so many new names and faces set to appear in the HBO series, here is the full cast for the show side by side with their film equivalent.
25. Ravenclaw
Only one of this Ravenclaw bunch has been in the Harry Potter films, and that’s Padma Patil, who will be played by Anjula Murali (pictured, far right) in the show, following in the footsteps of Afshan Azad. Ahead of her, however, there’s Aaron Zhao as Terry Boot, Eve Walls as Lisa Turpin, and Scarlett Archer as Penelope Clearwater. | Aidan Monaghan/HBO/Getty Images
26. Slytherin
There are a lot of Slytherin characters who will appear in the TV show, for the first time. We’ll go along the top row first, which shows Eddison Burch as Miles Bletchley, James Dowell and Lucian Bole, Oliver Croft as Marcus Flint – who was played by Jamie Yeates in the first two films – Dylan Heath as Adrian Pucey, and finally for the top row, Henry Medhurst as Peregrine Derrick. Then along the bottom row there’s Lox Pratt’s Lord of the Flies co-star Cornelius Brandreth as Terence Higgs, Laila Barwick as Pansy Parkinson – who was played by Scarlett Byrne in the last three films — and D’angelou Osei-Kissiedu as Graham Montague, last. | Aidan Monaghan/HBO/Getty Images
27. Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle — Finn Stephens and William Nash (TV) & Jamie Waylett and Joshua Herdman (films)
We also know who will play Draco’s Slytherin housemates, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. Finn Stephens will play Crabbe in the show, with William Nash as Goyle. Jamie Waylett played Crabbe in the first six films, but was arrested before the final two. Goyle was played by Joshua Herdman, who still acts and is also known for his Mixed Martial Arts. | Getty Images
28. Hufflepuff
The final house: Hufflepuff. Again, pretty much none of these characters have appeared in the films. First there is India Moon as Hannah Abbott, then there is Susan Bones, a character who is credited only in the first two films as she was played by director Christopher Columbus’ daughter, Eleanor. Following along the row, there’s Cian Eagle-Service as Ernie Macmillan and James Trevelyan Buckle as Justin Finch-Fletchley. | Aidan Monaghan/HBO/Getty Images
