After filming in Scotland last year, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has finally docked on Netflix.
Production on the new Mary Shelley adaptation began in Edinburgh in September 2024, after the Oscar-winning director and his team scouted around the country for locations the year prior.
Crews shut down areas including the Royal Mile and St Giles Cathedral to shoot the film, with further filming taking place in locations including Glasgow, Arbroath, Aberdeenshire and East Lothian and landmarks such as the Wallace Monument inspiring design.
A dream project for del Toro, who has described Frankenstein as “part of his DNA” , the Mexican filmmaker has made the most of his time in Scotland even staying in a haunted hotel while here.
Deepening Scotland’s ties to Shelley’s classic novel once again, production designer Tamara Deverell shared in an interview that the author’s connections to Scotland helped them settle on the country as a “hero” location.
For those keeping an eye out while watching the film, here is every Frankenstein filming location in Scotland.
