Other Frankenstein filming locations in Scotland include Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire and Hospitalfield House in Arbroath as well as Glasgow Cathedral.

Del Toro kept his followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, updated about an “angry and territorial” spirit he was sharing his Aberdeen hotel room with. Some fans have also reported seeing Australian actor Jacob Elordi around East Lothian where filming was taking place at Seacliff Beach.

While not part of the film’s cast, Shia LaBeouf has also made waves.

The Hollywood star is married to Frankenstein actress Mia Goth and was spotted “squaring up” to Edinburgh locals outside the OX184 bar in the city’s Cowgate. The incident was quickly broken up, with other reports stating that LaBeouf has been seen happily taking pictures with fans earlier that week.

Del Toro has been working on Frankenstein for more than a decade

Having previously described Shelley’s novel as his favourite book of all time, acclaimed director Del Toro has been working on a Frankenstein film for more than a decade. Even before he began to work on his own Shelley adaptation, del Toro has discussed his fascination with monsters.

In a 2008 interview with The Scotsman, del Toro said: “Even as a kid, I knew that monsters were far more gentle and far more desirable than the monsters living inside 'nice people'.

“I think being a monster, and accepting that you are a monster, gives you the leeway to not behave like one.

“There are truths about oneself that are really bad and hard to admit. But when you finally have the courage and say them, you liberate yourself. And monsters are a personification of that."

Frankenstein is set to be released next year.
