Wagner Moura in Edinburgh Tickets: Here's how to see the Oscar-tipped Narcos star at the Edinburgh International Festival in 'A Trial – after An Enemy of the People'

The Edinburgh International Festival have announced that a huge star will be coming to town next year - and tickets are on sale soon.
An actor tipped to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar at next year’s Academy Awards is set to star in a play at the 2026 Edinburgh International Festival.
Wagner Moura, best known for his Golden Globe nominated performance as Pablo Escobar in Netflix TV series Narcos, will appear in A Trial – after An Enemy of the People.
Moura won the Best Actor Award at Cannes this year for his part in The Secret Agent, and is widely expected to follow that up with Oscar, Bafta and Golden Globe nods.
Directed by award-winning Brazilian director Christiane Jatahy, the play is billed as a ‘continuation’ of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play.
It’s the first fruit of a historic three-year commissioning and producing initiative between the Edinburgh International Festival, Holland Festival, and Festival d’Avignon - all of whom were founded in 1947.
The play is one of four eye-catching productions recently announced by festival bosses, with advance tickets on sale between now and Christmas.
The Berliner Philharmoniker will aslo be in Edinburgh with two concerts, while Zurich Opera House will present a production of Verdi’s A Masked Ball, and San Francisco Ballet will return to the city for the first time in over 20 years with Mere Mortals.
Here’s what you need to know to bag a ticket.
When is A Trial – after An Enemy of the People coming to Edinburgh?
The play will open the theatre programme at the 2026 Edinburgh International Festival at the Lyceum Theatre.
There will be five performances, at 7.30pm each evening from Friday, August 7, to Monday, August 10, with a 3pm matinee on Saturday, August 8.
What is A Trial – after An Enemy of the People about?
Here’s the blurb for the play:
In Ibsen's groundbreaking 1882 play, An Enemy of the People, protagonist Thomas Stockmann faces shame and exile after attempting to expose a water pollution scandal in his hometown. More than a century later, Ibsen’s work remains urgent, grappling with the conflict between personal integrity and social conformity.
Jatahy’s sequel throws Stockmann into a modern-day public courtroom to determine his fate. Lawyers and judges are noticeably absent, and it’s up to a jury of audience members to decide if he is innocent or whether he is indeed an ‘enemy of the people’.
Transplanting Ibsen’s themes to contemporary Brazil, A Trial – After the Enemy of the People offers a sharp look at authoritarianism, fake news and public judgement. Ever inventive and deeply political, Jatahy combines audience participation and filmed footage, creating a one-of-a-kind performance each night where the line between reality and fiction is constantly blurred.
Who else is in the cast of the play?
Wagner Moura will lead a four-strong cast alongside Danilo Grangheia Tomás (The Hijacking of Flight 375), Julia Bernat (Aquarius) and Tatiana Henrique.
