This custom began in the Middle Ages, taking place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, the Christian period of fasting following Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.

Mothering Sunday, as it is traditionally known, saw those who had moved away from home - often at young ages - return to their “mother” church to reunite with their families.
