The Wee Man is out to make a big impression with new film Experience, Strength and Broke, write Olaf Furniss and Derick Mackinnon

Best known as a cult comedian and writer, The Wee Man (aka Neil Bratchpiece) has spent two decades influencing Scotland’s comedy and hip-hop scenes through viral sketches and rap parodies.

Though rooted in comedy (he’s won the Scottish Comedy Award twice) he’s long incorporated rap into his performances, including hosting battles at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and on BBC iPlayer, and he now appears in the new short film Experience, Strength and Broke, and on its soundtrack.

The film is produced by Donna Boyd, founder of recovery-focused arts organisation Freed Up CIC. We first encountered her work earlier this year on Lab Raps, the innovative Glasgow Barons album pairing Scottish hip-hop artists with classical, jazz and folk musicians.

Experience, Strength and Broke is released early next year under the HomegrownAlwaysBest banner, and features The Wee Man plus UTR favourite MOG, Fivo, Tribal John, Konchis, Jam, Werd (SOS), Lewis Findlay, ProphetSixFour and Jaylee.

Several of the featured artists will perform at a HomegrownAlwaysBest ninth anniversary event on 3 January at Glasgow’s McChuills, see https://www.instagram.com/homegrownalwaysbest
