9. The Writers’ Museum
Tucked away in a historic building in atmospheric Lady Stairs Close, The Writers’ Museum is a lesser-known attraction which celebrates the lives of three giants of Scottish Literature – Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Free to visit, it's home to rare books and personal objects including Burns’ writing desk, the printing press on which Scott’s Waverley Novels were first produced, the rocking horse he used as a child, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s riding boots. 10. The Scottish Parliament
Since being opened in 2004 after delays and soaring costs, the Scottish Parliament building has often proved as controversial as the discussions it hosts. For every person who loves the striking architecture at the base of Arthur's Seat, there will be another who hates it. Make up your own mind about the building by booking a free guided tour, or just popping by for a visit. Both are free - just apply for an appointment on the parliament website.
