Designers behind Gleneagles have created a beautiful hotel that celebrates wellness and community

The designers behind Gleneagles have done a stellar job on this serene and stylish city centre hotel that focuses on community and wellness.

Oxford Street and peace and quiet don’t often get mentioned in the same sentence. As one of London’s busiest shopping destinations, it’s alive and buzzing almost 24/7. But, just a stone’s throw away at the newly opened Newman Hotel on Newman Street you can almost forget that the hustle and bustle is a street away.

Opened in February 2026, this stylish hotel’s interior is the first major project for Lind + Almond, the team behind Glenagles’s Bob and Cloche boutique. Art deco inspired with a neutral and brown toned palette, there are nods to the characters of the Fitzrovia neighbourhood - past and present - through the new building, which doesn’t feel new at all but in the best way.

With a sultry basement cocktail bar, European inspired restaurant with outdoor seating, hot and cold therapy spa and a focus on wellness as well as wonderful service, it’s not just the central location that will have guests rebooking.

Budget or boutique?

There are 81 bedrooms and suites, and rates start from £695, making this a very boutique offering.

My one bedroom suite overlooked Newman Street and was surprisingly quiet once the pub across the street closed. With the same neutral and brown colour palette, punctuated with light blue, the living room furniture and accessories all had curved edges giving the room a luxurious cruise ship feel. These curves, and the geometric shapes found on the wooden flooring and carved into the headboard, are a nod to the bangles worn by Nancy Cunard, writer, activist and heiress of the Cunard empire who lived in the area. The suite had a spacious living room with bar area - complete with small bottles of spirits such as Johnnie Walker Blue label and Botanist gin - a shaker and cocktail book; sofa, armchair and desk area while the bedroom has a huge king sized bed, plenty of storage and an en suite with bath tub and separate shower. The sink, one piece of silk smooth marble, had a concertinaed effect, mirroring the architecture of Fitzrovia, a place where the bohemian creatives of the time made their homes. Present Fitzrovia residents are also celebrated throughout the hotel’s interior with a photograph of dapper local gentleman Trevor and Ray made into a feature wall and as illustrations on trinket trays in the rooms.

Wining and dining

The hotel has one main restaurant, Brasserie Angelica, which is available for all day dining including breakfast and dinner, which I enjoyed while there. A Northern European inspired menu, dinner dishes include: steak tartare served with gaufrette potatoes, Chalk Stream trout fillet served with morels and watercress velouté and cinnamon doughnut served with vanilla ice cream, hot chocolate sauce and almonds. Try the huge but delicious Swedish West Coast salad with prawns, mussels, crabs and mushrooms for something light while the Västerbotten cheese tart with smoked onion purée and fine bean salad was just decadent enough for a hot evening. I sat outside on the bistro furniture and could almost believe I was in Paris, if not for the men in the pub across the road loudly discussing West Ham. Breakfast was a very relaxed affair with an all a la carte offering. Fresh juices and smoothies as well as fruit and porridge are available for the more health conscious, alongside the usual eggs benedict and a fry up.

Gambit bar, located downstairs from the restaurant, is well worth a visit for creative cocktails and a funky, 70s vibe. Go for a drink and stay to play chess, as sets are dotted around tables.

Worth getting out of bed for

Oxford Street and all the shops you could ever want are less than five minutes away while Soho and Carnaby Street are about a ten minute walk. You can also walk to Hyde Park in around 30 minutes. The theatre district is a 15 minute walk while the Southbank is a 20 minute Tube journey. Basically this is one of the most centrally located hotels around. Once you’d shopped, taken in a show and explored the parks and riverside, the Newman has a spa which is centred around hot and cold therapy. There’s a steam room, sauna, halotherapy therapy (salt room), hydro pool and ice room, with helpful info on how best to enjoy each available in the bedrooms. Guests and locals can enjoy classes such as Pilates and sound baths, and treatments are also available to be booked.

Little extras

Fluffy robes, slippers and a selection of teas and coffees as you’d expect were available but the little luxuries - such as a speaker in the bathroom which played the TV audio, a deck of Gambit branded cards and a dice set - are lovely additions. There’s also a drawer packed full of wellness goodies such as CBD gummies, CBD oil and a sleep kit along with mushroom coffee and a can of Trip in the mini bar fridge that made me feel like my Instagram algorithm had come to life in one room.

The Newman, the first hotel by international hospitality management company Kinsfolk & Co, officially opened in London’s Fitzrovia in February 2026. It has been thoughtfully created by a team of like-minded hoteliers and restaurateurs who have spent decades working in the capital. With a concept inspired by and deeply rooted in the charm and character of Fitzrovia, the hotel has been designed by studio Lind + Almond, known for creating spaces with an understated yet worldly eclecticism.
