Scottish Golf's latest Lifetime Achievement Award winner revealed
Highlands and Islands stalwart will receive prize at Scottish Golf Awards in Glasgow
A well-known figure in golf in the Highlands and Islands has been selected as this year’s recipient of Scottish Golf’s Lifetime Honour Award.
Willie MacKay, who has been a stalwart in his beloved home region for five decades, will be presented with the prize, sponsored by DotGolf, at next week’s Scottish Golf Awards in Glasgow.
The 75-year-old Royal Dornoch members follows June McEwan on the roll of honour after another of the game’s great servants was honoured with the accolade last year.

“It feels totally surreal, and most unexpected,” said MacKay. “I’m lost for words and that’s saying something because I was vaccinated by a gramophone needle! I’m honoured and thankful for all the support I’ve received within Scottish golf.”
A former PE teacher, MacKay has been a passionate advocate for golf, and especially junior golf, ever since he got into the game when gifted a set of clubs by his wife Maureen for his 30th birthday.
‘I’ve just tried to help people’
He was involved in golf development for 17 years, initially through a role linked to the Junior Ryder Cup. MacKay also set up Golf Highland, which has been a game-changer in the region. “All along I’ve just tried to help people and people help me,” he said.
“When I look at what’s been done in places like Shetland or Orkney, improving facilities in Stornoway…… you look at little Lybster, who are now media savvy and celebrating 100 years. My recognition is really for the other people that you energise and get on board.”
