Riley Higgins' brother joins Edinburgh Rugby - 'something pretty special'

Kienan Higgins returns to capital from US side

Kienan Higgins has rejoined Edinburgh Rugby on a one-year deal and follows his brother, Riley, to the club.

Kienan, a 26-year-old centre who is currently with New England Free Jacks in the US, will link up with Sean Everitt’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Scottish-qualified New Zealander had a short spell at Edinburgh earlier this year but did not play for the first team.

His return to the Scottish capital comes five weeks after Edinburgh announced the signing of Riley Higgins from Super Rugby Pacific side Hurricanes on a three-year deal amid much fanfare. At 23, he is three years younger than Kienan and was hailed by the club “as one of the most significant pieces of recruitment in Edinburgh Rugby's recent history”.

Brothers could pair up in Edinburgh midfield

Also a centre, Riley and Kienan could now pair up in the Edinburgh midfield next season, although the younger brother is not expected to join up until November as he recover from shoulder surgery.

Speaking on his return, Kienan Higgins said: “I am absolutely delighted to be coming back to Edinburgh. I loved my time here earlier in the season and I can't wait to see the squad again – there are some brilliant people at this club.

“It's obviously an incredible bonus that I get to come back alongside Riley; to play alongside my brother at the same club is something pretty special.

“I've really enjoyed my time with the Free Jacks and I'm grateful to everyone there for the experience, but Edinburgh is where I want to be. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in this summer and being back in the city.”

Everitt, the Edinburgh head coach, added: “We really enjoyed working with Kienan during his time here and we're delighted to welcome him back this summer.

“He made a strong impression during his spell with us and we're excited about what he can bring to the squad on a longer-term basis. He will add further competition in what is already a very competitive midfield group.”
