Premiership round-up: Watsonians claim rivalry bragging rights as Ayr get back to winning ways

Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership tie of the weekend doesn’t disappoint as Edinburgh sides play out 42-35 thriller.

Watsonians survived two yellow cards and a late Heriot’s surge to claim the bragging rights over their Edinburgh rivals in the latest round of Premiership action.

The hosts surged into an early two-try lead at Myreside with scores from Max Garry and Fin Mather before Harry Fisher was sin binned on 12 minutes for a deliberate knock on. Stuart Edwards’ side took full advantage with an extra man and ran in three tries inside ten minutes with Ali Johnston, Isaac Coates and Aidan Boyle crossing.

Watsonians responded on the stroke of half time with Hamish Mather the try scorer to make sure the score was level at 21-21 going into the break. Fin Mather then scored early in the second half to put the home team back in front, but Heriot’s quickly responded through Michael Jones.

Watsonians claim Edinburgh bragging rights as Ayr, Melrose and Kelso also pick up wins

Brodie Young was the next to cross for the home team to put them back in front but another yellow card, this time for Chris Bell, for another deliberate knock on saw them once again down to 14 men. Heriot’s immediately responded with Callum Jessop’s try once again levelling the score.

Davey Wilson’s side got themselves in front again through Gus Goodwin on 71 minutes despite still having Robson in the bin. Heriot’s had penalties and scrums with the clock in the red, but Watsonians managed to turn the ball over and secure the 42-35 victory with the visitors getting the two losing bonus points as a consolation.

Elsewhere in the Premiership, Ayr got back to winning ways after their loss to Heriot’s last weekend as they beat GHA 55-28 at Millbrae, while Melrose were 31-26 winners away to Edinburgh Accies and Kelso beat Glasgow Hawks 28-17 at home. Currie Chieftains match at home to Hawick was postponed earlier in the week as a mark of respect following the passing of their former head coach Ally Donaldson.

The tie of the round next weekend comes from the Greenyards as Borders rivals Melrose and Hawick face off. Currie will host Kelso, Ayr are at Glasgow Hawks, GHA travel to Heriot’s and there’s another Edinburgh derby with Watsonians welcoming Edinburgh Accies.
