Glasgow Warriors injury update as Scotland duo 'back in the mix' for URC quarter-final

Neither has featured for club since being injured in Six Nations

Jamie Dobie and Scott Cummings are back in training with Glasgow Warriors ahead of Friday’s United Rugby Championship quarter-final against Connacht at Scotstoun.

Neither has featured for the club since being injured during the Six Nations but both players are in the mix for the play-off match.

The news around Huw Jones is less positive, with the centre unable to return to training following a foot issue.

Dobie, the scrum-half/wing, suffered a shoulder injury in Scotland’s Calcutta Cup win over England on February 14. Cummings, the lock forward, has not played since the national side beat France on March 7 due to a calf problem. Scott Forrest, Glasgow’s assistant coach, says both players have a chance of being involved against Connacht.

“They’re back in the mix,” said Forrest. “We had a few days off but trained Monday and Tuesday last week. Certainly Jamie Dobie and Scott Cummings trained last week. So it's more that we just need to see how they react.

“So firstly, I think it's great to see them back on the pitch, it kind of gives everyone a lift. We'll just wait and see whether they're actually in the mix this week, or obviously if we get past this weekend, then is it going to be the week after.”

Jones, Glasgow’s international centre, has not played since the Warriors’ loss to the Stormers on April 25.

“Again he's still recovering in terms of his foot injury,” said Forrest. “He's not been on the pitch this week so he didn't train last week. He will hopefully play again this season but whether it's this week or semi-final, again if we get there, then we'll just wait and see.”

Gregor Brown and Matt Fagerson updates

Gregor Brown, Glasgow’s back-five forward, was another who was injured during the Six Nations. He made his comeback in the win over Ulster recently but lasted only 14 minutes.

“It was his first game back from his hamstring injury and tweaked his calf against Ulster,” said Forrest. “He didn't train last week because we only trained on Monday and Tuesday as a team. So it’s really just a case of assessing it.”

Matt Fagerson withdrew from the team to play Ulster but Forrest said it was “nothing too serious”. “He just felt his groin a little bit, so again, he should be back in the mix.”

If Glasgow can overcome Connacht they will play either the Bulls or Munster in the URC semi-finals, with the match likely to be held at Murrayfield a week on Saturday.

There remains uncertainty about whether the national stadium would be available should Glasgow progress to the final. The country singer Zach Bryan is due to play at Murrayfield on June 14, six days before the URC final. Initially, it was thought that wouldn’t be enough time to have the stadium ready. However, it could now be possible, although it may depend on the state of the pitch after the concert.

“If that happened obviously it would be great for our fans and it would be great for us but until it's confirmed we don't really want to pay too much attention to it,” said Forrest.
