Finn Russell discusses his Scotland future and if he'll play beyond 2027 Rugby World Cup

Bath fly-half opens up on retirement talk and how much longer he could play for club and country.

One of the biggest questions asked by Scottish rugby supporters over the past few seasons is if the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia will potentially mark the end of Finn Russell’s international career.

The fly-half will turn 34 this month and will be another year older by the time the winner of the Webb Ellis Cup is decided in Sydney. The Bath superstar and three time British & Irish Lions tourist, who has 95 Test caps for his country, will almost certainly be a Scotland centurion by that point and has already done enough to be considered one of his nation’s greatest ever players.

In a recent interview the former Glasgow Warriors and Racing 92 stand-off was asked about how much longer he plans to keep playing. As expected, his answer left the door open for plenty of possibilities.

“I don’t want to put a number on it” - Scotland star Finn Russell has no immediate plans to call time on rugby career

“I've got this year and next year at Bath,” he told SomersetLive. “So it takes me up to summer 2028 I think. It's a funny one, it's something that people ask you, you know, what do you think after the next World Cup and Test commitments in 2028 and where you're going to be playing or what you're going to be doing.

"I don't want to put a number on it, I don't want to be like, oh I'm going to finish up after the World Cup or after that season I'm going to finish up. I've maybe said that a few times and within like a few days I'm just like, nah, I don't know. It's hard to tell you, it could be in a year's time, a year and a half's time, it could be in four years' time that I'm just like, I've maybe had enough of this now and I want something different or I want more time off to spend with the family pretty much, I'm not sure yet.

"I'm just going to play as long as I'm enjoying it, I'm just going to keep going as long as I can. I've got nothing to kind of stop anytime soon. Hopefully that's a good thing, but we'll see."
