Former Scotland and Glasgow Warriors player lands role with England coaching staff
The ex Sale Sharks and Exeter Chief winger previously joined the Steve Borthwick’s set-up for their tour to Argentina and the United States last year.
Former Scotland winger Byron Mcguigan has joined the England men’s coaching team on a full-time basis.
The 36-year-old initially linked up with Steve Borthwick ahead of their tour to Argentina and the United States in 2025. At that point he was splitting his time between the national side and Sale Sharks where he played from 2016 to 2023.
McGuigan will join the England management team with a focus on collision skills, aerial contests and working with the back three. They are due to face South Africa, Fiji and Argentina in this summer’s inaugural Nations Championship Test matches.
Former Scotland winger an ‘excellent addition’ to England coaching team says Steve Borthwick
“Byron is an excellent addition to our coaching group,” said England head coach Borthwick. “Since arriving with us last summer, he has made a strong impact through his detailed understanding of the game and the energy he brings.
“His work in supporting the development of our back-three players has already been valuable, and he has also invested a huge amount of time into individual player development across the squad. We’re excited about the contribution he will continue to make.”
McGuigan earned ten caps for Scotland between 2017 and 2020, scoring three tries including a double against Australia at Murrayfield in the 2017 end-of-year internationals. At club level he had a brief spell with Glasgow Warriors between 2012 and 2014 but the bulk of his playing career was spent in English rugby’s top flight.
He was with Exeter Chiefs from 2014 to 2016 before moving to Sale Sharks. He made over 100 appearances for the Salford-based club before hanging up his boots in 2023 and moving into coaching.
Towards the end of his career the winger looked to switch international allegiances and represent Namibia, the country of his birth. However, he was not selected in their squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
“It’s a huge honour to be part of the England set-up,” added McGuigan. “Since coming into the environment last summer, I’ve been really impressed by the players’ appetite to learn and improve.
“I’m excited to continue supporting the group and helping the players develop as we keep pushing standards forward.”
