Edinburgh Rugby sign back with six tries in 14 games in English second tier

Second new arrival at Hive Stadium in three days

Edinburgh Rugby have further strengthened their squad for next season with the signing of former Scotland Under-20 international Geordie Gwynn.

The 22-year-old, who can play wing or centre, will arrive in the summer from English Champ side Ealing Trailfinders on a three-year deal.

He is Edinburgh’s second new signing in three days following the announcement on Sunday that Riley Higgins would be joining the capital team from the New Zealand Super Rugby franchise the Hurricanes.

Gwynn has scored six tries in 14 matches this season for Ealing who are the runaway leaders in England’s second tier. He was born and raised in England but his mother is from Edinburgh and he has come through the Scottish pathway at international level.

Part of side that put Scotland U20 back in the elite

Capped 10 times by Scotland U20, he was part of the squad that won the World Rugby U20 Trophy in summer 2024. The victory meant the young Scots were promoted back to the top tier at under-20 level and Gwynn scored two tries in the pool stage win over Japan.

His international progress continued this season when he played for Emerging Scotland against Tonga at Scotstoun in November.

“I'm delighted to sign for Edinburgh,” Gwynn said. “It'll be really nice to see some familiar faces, and I'm looking forward to getting to know the rest of the players and staff.

“Playing in front of such passionate fans in a competitive league is something that I'm really excited for. I believe Edinburgh is the perfect place for me to develop my game, continue improving, and I can't wait to get stuck in.”

Born in Brighton, Gwynn joined Lewes RFC at the age of four. He played for Brunel University before signing for Ealing Trailfinders in 2022.

Explosive and dynamic

At 6ft 2in, Gwynn offers a physical presence and Edinburgh coach Sean Everitt sees him as a powerful wing option.

“We're delighted to welcome Geordie to Edinburgh this summer,” said Everitt. “He's an explosive, dynamic back who has impressed everyone who has watched him come through the age-grade ranks, and his performances with Scotland U20 showed he has the quality and temperament to compete at the highest level.

“Six tries in 14 games this season is a solid return for a young winger still developing his game, and he's shown plenty of promise throughout the campaign. He further bolsters what is already an exciting and competitive back line, and at just 22, with the pathway he's already been through, we genuinely believe he has everything he needs to kick on and fulfil his potential here. We can't wait to get him involved.”
