Patrick Reed 'delighted' to make PGA Tour return in Genesis Scottish Open

In-form American opens up on early return to US circuit after moving into lead in Qatar

Patrick Reed is “delighted” that his PGA Tour return is set to come in the Genesis Scottish Open in East Lothian in July after deciding to leave LIV Golf.

Unlike Brooks Koepka, the former Masters champion can’t make an immediate return to the US circuit due to the fact he didn’t meet the criteria of a Returning Member Programme.

Instead, Reed, who left the Dustin Johnson-captained 4Aces team on the breakaway circuit, is having to serve a one-year suspension, which will come to an end on 26 August this year.

First reported by bunkered.co.uk and having also been confirmed to The Scotsman, the 35-year-old will be eligible, though, for the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.

He’ll be able to enter the $9 million co-sanctioned event as a DP World Tour card holder and it is believed that the PGA Tour are fine with that position.

The news was welcomed by Reed after he’d stepped up his bid to secure a 2027 PGA Tour card by moving into the halfway lead in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Doha.

‘I love that event and links golf’

“I’m delighted as I love that event and links golf,” said the world No 25, who played in three successive Scottish Opens from 2016, finishing in the top ten on his debut at Castle Stuart.

Reed, who won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic a fortnight ago before tying for second in the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship last weekend, sits one clear in Qatar after rounds of 65-67.

If he wins on Sunday, the Texan-born player is likely to have picked up enough Race to Dubai points to secure one of the ten PGA Tour cards up for grabs once again on the DP World Tour this season.

Ewen Ferguson, the 2022 winner, is three off the lead in Doha, where Grant Forrest, Cameron Adam and Calum Hill also progressed to the weekend.
