When is Josh Kerr racing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games? Here's how to watch Scotland's newest record breaker go for gold

The event is one of the showcase races in the Commonwealth Games athletics programme.

We’re now into the second half of this year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games, with Scotland sitting fourth in the medal table.

Last time the city held the event in 2014 it was a huge success - with many hailing it as the best Games ever.

This year it’s been scaled back somewhat after Glasgow stepped in at the last minute when Victoria in Australia abandoned plans to host due to spiraling costs.

But there will still be lots to enjoy, with around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competing across 10 different sports, from boxing to swimming.

The athletics is already well underway at Scotstoun Stadium, in Glasgow’s West End.

And one of the most anticipated events for local sports fans is the Men’s One Mile race, featuring Scotland’s Josh Kerr who made headlines earlier this month when he broke the world record in London.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch him in action in Glasgow.

Who is Josh Kerr?

Kerr was born on October 8, 1997, in Edinburgh, to a physiotherapist mother and a father who was a former rugby player. Sport certainly runs in the family - his older brother is a professional rugby player.

He was educated at George Watson’s College and ran for Edinburgh Athletics Club from the age of eight. After school won a scholarship to the University of New Mexico. Shortly before he left for the States he won gold in the 1500 m at the 2015 European Athletics Junior Championships.

He turned professional in 2018 and, in the 1500metres, has won gold at 2023 World Championships, silver at the 2024 Summer Olympics, and bronze at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

He’s also the 2024 and 2026 world indoor champion in the 3000 metres, and is the world record holder for the mile distance.

Kerr ran in the first round of the Men’s Mile at Scotstoun Stadium at on Wednesday and coasted into the final after winning his heat with ease

He’ll now go for gold at 8.55pm on Saturday, August 1.

Why is the mile included in the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games?

The mile has not been included in the Commonwealth Games for 60 years, when it was replaced by the 1500m, having formerly features in every Games since 1930.

The race’s return was personally championed by World Athletics president Sebastian Coe, who said it was a “quintessential Commonwealth athletics event”.

It remains the only non‑metric event recognised officially for world records and rankings.
