There was Bruce Mouat and Jennifer Dodds coming an agonising fourth in the Mixed Doubles and Shirley Jackson’s women’s teams coming within a single stone of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Then Bruce Mouat edged his men’s team into the last four, beat Switzerland in a memorable semi-final, only for a sloppy penultimate end to see them have to settle for their second silver Olympic medal in succession.

And the women’s team, led by Sophie Jackson, came agonisingly close to a semi-final berth.

A television audience of millions followed the exploits of the Scottish althetes, but there’s no need to wait for another four years to enjoy the sport.
