Scotland end the Commonwealth Games with three boxing bronze medals
Taxi driver Caitlin Rainey made history by claiming Scotland’s first-ever medal in women’s boxing at the Commonwealth Games after winning bronze in the 65kg division.
The 23-year-old from Renton had already guaranteed a place on the podium after knocking down Flora Loga of Papua New Guinea three times to win her quarter-final bout on Tuesday, with both losing semi-finalists still earning bronze.
Victory set up an intriguing clash with Northern Ireland's Kaci Rock at the SEC on Friday morning, and despite winning the first round, Rainey lost the fight on split-decision after her opponent landed an strong hit at the end of the second to force a tense final round, which just went in her favour.

While it wasn't the medal colour she wanted, Rainey was able to pick out the positives in her historic performance.
She stated: "I'm proud of myself and I hope I've made my family proud by doing this. I'm disappointed not to be in the final and give the fans something to cheer for but I can take a lot away from this. I hope I can inspire the next lot coming through and they can go one better than me and get that gold medal for Team Scotland that we're all rooting for."
Heavyweight Robert McNulty (90kg) and Sonny Kerr (70kg division) both bagged bronze medals after losing their semi-final bouts by unanimous decision.
Lochwinoch fighter McNulty was outpointed by Isaac Okoh of England, while Aberdonian Kerr was denied a shot at the gold-medal match by Northern Ireland’s Jon McConnell.
Mixed fortunes for Scotland in opening Judo session
Elsewhere, four Scottish Judo hopefuls were involved in the opening session and endured mixed fortunes.
Neil Macdonald and Aiden Moffat both suffered exits in the men’s under 66kg category. Macdonald won his opening Round of 32 clash but lost to Michael Fryer of England in the last-16, while Moffat progressed to the quarter-finals. After tasting defeat, the Perth star was unable to make the most of his second chance as he lost to Australia’s Vas Middleton in the repechage.
However, their was success for five-time British champion Summer Shaw on her Games debut as she secured bronze in the Women’s under 48kg division after defeating Botho Babutsi of Botswana by Ippon (100-0). Youngster Eva Ewing missed out on the podium after losing to Malta’s Katryna Esposito.
Scotland suffer defeat to round off historic netball campaign
Over at the Netball, Scotland brought the curtain down on their campaign with a slender 54-47 defeat to Malawi, finishing a respectable eighth in the overall standings.
The Thistles had already achieved their highest ever Commonwealth Games finish, but were bidding to sign off on a high at the Hydro. However, they were unable to build on a spirited showing against Uganda in their final group game.

Trailing 30-23 at the halfway stage, the Scots rallied in the second half and finished strongly but were kept at arms length by the Malawian Queens, who wrapped up seventh spot.
“I hope it's a real signal that people need to watch us,” Keth Tetley, the Scotland coach reflected. “We talk about fearing the thistle, and that's really exciting for us because people here have always thought that the Scots were just really cool and good fun to be around. But I'm really hoping now that there's a little bit of ‘oh dear, you've got to watch out for them and they won't go away.’ We want to become more fierce.”
