Idi Amin's grandson vows to become new King of Scotland with Ringo Punch at Commonwealth Games

Big-talking Ugandan boxer aims to pack a punch in Glasgow

The grandson of Idi Amin has cited the former Ugandan dictator as his inspiration ahead of making his Commonwealth Games boxing debut, saying he hopes to become the 'new King of Scotland' - a title his grandfather once claimed for himself.

Amin was famously obsessed with all things Scottish military history, often wearing a tartan kilt and playing the bagpipes. He also held Uganda's national light-heavyweight title for nearly a decade before building a reputation for cruelty and intimidation that claimed the lives of an estimated 300,000 people.

Aziz Abdul, nicknamed Ringo, makes his Commonwealth Games debut next week in the heavyweight boxing competition against England's Damar Thomas, viewed as one of British boxing's most exciting emerging talent.

Amin - who ruled Uganda for eight bloody years in the seventies - dubbed himself the 'Conqueror of the British Empire', and the 25-year-old has inherited his flair for fighting talk.

"I am very happy to be fighting the English fighter," he said. "Nobody knows what is going to happen. As Mike Tyson said, 'everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face'. Anything can happen in heavyweight boxing.

"My grandfather's achievements inspired me. He was a heavyweight boxer like me, and I am so proud of him. Now we are not in Africa, we are in Europe. As my grandpa used to say, you need to win by knockout, so that's what we have trained for and that's what I hope to do.

"I believe in myself and I mean what I say. When I say I will do it, I will do it. Let them not doubt me. I am aiming for the gold medal."

The Ugandan claims to have developed a secret weapon for the Games but admitted he was no fan of British heavyweights Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, preferring the savage street smarts of Iron Mike.

Uganda have won eight Commonwealth boxing golds, including three at the 1970 Games in Edinburgh, but haven't topped the podium in the sport since Auckland 1990.

"My idol is Mike Tyson, the baddest man on the planet," he added. "If I win the gold medal, I will be the baddest man in the Commonwealth, the baddest man in Glasgow, and the new King of Scotland.

"My big weapon is my Ringo Punch. I am not going to tell you about it – I will show you on the day if the right time comes. You will see what the Ringo Punch looks like. The big boys are here now.

"Lions give back to lions. A lion cannot give back to a dog or a camel. A lion must resemble a lion. It is what it is. I am a real warrior. I am the son of the son.

"I have been waiting for this moment for three years. It is what I have been targeting. Finally the time has come for me to go and get what I want."
