The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award (or SPOTY) was first held in 1954 when around 14,500 voters decided to crown Christopher Chataway over fellowrunner Roger Bannister.

Since then the winners read like a roll call of British sporting greats, with the likes of Andy Murray, Mo Farah, Chris Hoy, Lewis Hamilton, Kelly Holmes and David Beckham all lifting the trophy.

Last year saw athlete Keely Hodgkinson take the main prize, while dart prodigy Luke Littler came runner-up and also claimed the Young SPOTY Award.

And the shortlist has now been revealed for this year’s award.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s event - with Littler in the runnning again for two prizes.
