Jim Furyk confirmed for second stint as US captain in 2027 Ryder Cup
Americans plump for losing skipper in 2018 match to try and win trophy back in Ireland
Jim Furyk has been confirmed for a second stint as US Ryder Cup captain for next year’s match at Adare Manor in Ireland.
Since making his Ryder Cup debut as a player in 1997, Furyk has represented the US in 14 consecutive editions of the biennial event, serving as a player, vice captain and captain.
The former US Open champion becomes the ninth person to captain multiple US Ryder Cup teams after previously leading the Americans in 2018 at Le Golf National in France.

“Jim Furyk has been an influential figure in the United States team room for nearly three decades,” said Nathan Charnes, PGA of America vice president. “He is a trusted, widely-respected leader and possesses a wealth of Ryder Cup experience that can only serve to strengthen our team.
“Competing in Ryder Cups hosted in Europe presents unique challenges and we are confident in Jim’s leadership to guide the US team over the next two years as we prepare for Ireland.”
The post for the centenary edition in County Limerick had been offered to Tiger Woods by the PGA of America, which is involved in the biennial event along with Ryder Cup Europe.
However, Woods removed himself from the picture following his latest car crash a month ago and subsequent decision to “step away” from golf for a spell.
Former Open champion Justin Leonard then threw his hat into the ring while a second stint for Keegan Bradley, who saw his side come close to pulling off a sensational final-day fightback in last year’s contest in New York, was another option.

However, a decision has been made to appoint Furyk, who played in nine consecutive Ryder Cups from 1997 to 2014. In addition to his losing captaincy at Le Golf National, the 55-year-old has served as a vice captain on four occasions.
“The opportunity to captain the US Ryder Cup team for a second time is a tremendous honor,” said Furyk, who will be up against Luke Donald, a winning captain in the last two editions, in County Limerick. “I am deeply grateful to the PGA of America Ryder Cup Committee for entrusting me to lead our team into the 46th Ryder Cup.
Target is to ‘reclaim the Cup on European soil’
“My passion for the Ryder Cup and dedication to the US team have never been stronger. Having previously captained the team, I understand the responsibilities and immense pride that come with this role. I look forward to drawing on that experience while incorporating some new ideas as we prepare for 2027.
“I am committed to putting our players in the best position to succeed as we work to reclaim the Cup on European soil.”
In 2018 at Le Golf National in Paris, nine-time Ryder Cup player Furyk saw his side get off to a great start by winning the opening fourball session 3-1.
However, the visitors then suffered a 4-0 whitewash in the afternoon foursomes before losing the third session 3-1 to a European team captained by Thomas Bjorn. The home side went on to win that match 17.5-10.5 and have also won two of the three editions since then.
Furyk, who plays on the Champions Tour these days, led the US to victory in the 2024 Presidents Cup captain in 2024 before being one of Bradley’s assistants in the last Ryder Cup.
