Geographic mix of players in Scottish Women's semi-final line up at Southerness

Both top seed and rising star bow out on first day of match-play phase at Southerness

Moray’s Ellie Docherty beat top seed Abigail May from St Andrews as a geographic spread of players progressed to the semi-finals of the Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at Southerness.

May, who won the 36-hole qualifying on Friday at the Dumfriesshire venue, cleared the first hurdle in the match–play as she beat Nairn’s Corrine Taylor by 4&3 in the opening round.

But her title hopes were then dashed in the afternoon as Docherty recorded a 2&1 victory in their second-round clash.

May’s fellow St Regulus Ladies member and rising star, Carly McDonald, also bowed out on the opening day of the knock-out action in the Solway coast as she lost on the 19th to Erin Huskie.

The Stirling player then backed that up with another hard-earned win at the first extra hole against Craigielaw’s Jade Potter in the second round.

Huskie’s last-four opponent on Sunday morning is Gullane’s Abercrombie Nisbet, who kept her title hopes alive after beating the defending champion, East Kilbride’s Susan Woodhouse, by 2&1.

Docherty, meanwhile, faces Pollok’s Rosie Maguire after she ended Ailsa Brannock’s hopes of landing Scottish Golf’s marquee women’s title on home soil.

Calum Hill is top Scot in Belgium

Elsewhere, South African Zander Lombard takes a three-shot lead into the final round of the DP World Tour’s Soudal Open at Rinkven International in Belgium.

With Lombard sitting in a strong position on 18 under at the Antwerp venue as he chases a maiden tour title, Calum Hill is the leading Scot, tied for 24th on eight under.

After both being four under through five for the day before seeing those hot starts sizzle out, Cameron Adam and Euan Walker are alongside each other on seven under, two better than compatriots Connor Syme and Scott Jamieson.
