The former Celtic manager had been in the job for only six weeks but failed to win a match while in charge.

Forest released a short statement following Saturday’s 3-0 home loss to Chelsea, with the club currently 18th in the Premier League.

“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect,” said the statement. “The club will make no further comment at this time.”

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis left his seat midway through the Chelsea match at the City Ground and an announcement on Postecoglou’s future was confirmed 19 minutes after full-time.

The 60-year-old was appointed Forest head coach on September 9 following the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo with the season just three games old.

The Australian was in charge for eight games but could not secure a victory, drawing two and losing six, including a 3-2 defeat by Swansea City in the League Cup.

Prior to joining Forest, Postecoglou spent two seasons in charge of Tottenham Hotspur and led them to the Europa League final victory over Manchester United in May. The victory gave Spurs their first major silverware in 17 years and also qualified them for the Champions League but it wasn’t enough to keep Postecoglou in the job and he was relieved of his duties in the close season following a poor domestic campaign.

During his two years at Celtic, Postecoglou won five of the six domestic trophies on offer, including a treble in his final season, 2022-23.
