It was delayed by a year, but for women’s football fans, the Women’s European Championship was well worth the wait.
Beginning on July 6 at Manchester United’s Old Trafford, the tournament ended in awe-inspiring fashion when Sarina Wiegman’s England Lionesses defeated Germany thanks to a late extra time strike from Chloe Kelly at a sold out Wembley Stadium.
Attendances record were broken, record scorelines took place and for a generation of young girls – and young boys – female athletes made a mark on the world’s most popular sport that cannot be denied. Thankfully, it appears women’s football will now never look back.
Off the field, it was memorable – however, on the field, it was packed full of talented individuals and outstanding performances.
But who do we think were the best players in each position across the tournament? Who shone brightest at a tournament of leading lights?
Here is The Scotsman’s Women’s Euros team of the tournament.

9. Beth Mead (England)
Even the biggest Beth Mead couldn't have predicted just how good she would be in the Euros. In a word, the Arsenal forward was incredible and deservedly awarded the player of the tournament. Six goals, five assists, player of the tournament and a European trophy to boot. Sensational. Photo: LINDSEY PARNABY

10. Alessia Russo (England)
Maybe our first real controversial pick, considering she didn't start a game, however the Manchester United youngster put her stamp on the Euros more than some even realise. She was Sarina Wiegman's secret weapon and made a difference every single time she came off the bench. She was the third top scorer in the tournament, and her sensational strikes against Sweden and Northern Ireland will be replayed for decades to come. Photo: Harriet Lander

11. Alexandra Popp (Germany)
Football can be unfair at the best of times, and the late injury which robbed Alex Popp of a place in the Euro 2022 final was truly a tragedy. The joint highest goalscorer, she led a previously unfancied Germany all the way to the final with her quality, determination and ability in front of goal. Photo: Harriet Lander
