SPFL club chairman steps down over 'threatening and derogatory behaviour' in echoes of Peter Lawwell
Championship chief cites similar issues faced by departing Celtic chairman
Greenock Morton chairman John Laird has stepped down with immediate effect, citing "sustained online abuse" and “threatening and derogatory behaviour”.
The local businessman was appointed chairman of the Scottish Championship outfit in October 2023 and has overseen a turbulent period that saw the club incur a transfer embargo from Fifa in March due to an administrative error.
There was also a messy end to Dougie Imrie's spell as manager following his exit to Raith Rovers in November where the club was forced to deny the contents of a leaked voice note detailing sensitive claims over a behind-the-scenes fall-out.

Laird's decision to end his 40-year association with Morton leaves the Cappielow side without a chairman or permanent manager, with technical director Billy Davies currently in interim charge while the search for Imrie’s successor is ongoing.
In a statement which echoes the Peter Lawwell case - the Celtic chairman announcing his decision to stand down earlier this month due to "abuse and threats" - Laird claimed his departure was based on the words and actions of supporters who had “crossed an unacceptable line”.
“I have taken the difficult decision to step down from my position as Chairman of Greenock Morton Football Club," Laird wrote.
"I have been associated with the club for over 40 years, a period of service of which I am extremely proud. This decision has not been taken lightly. However, sustained online abuse, threatening and derogatory behaviour directed towards both myself and my family, and libellous comments made in writing and online have now crossed an unacceptable line.
"What began as criticism relating to football matters has escalated into behaviour that is impacting my personal life, family, household, and business interests. This situation is no longer tolerable, and I cannot allow my continued association with the club to negatively and distressfully affect myself and those closest to me.
"I am deeply disappointed to step down under these circumstances.
"I wish the club, the board of directors, the administration staff, management team and playing staff every success for the future, and I thank those supporters who have shown respect and decency over the years.”
